Thana cited two other reasons that make the task an interesting one: that it would give him a chance to work alongside Telenor's global high-calibre team members, and that the Myanmar government is opening up the country. Telenor is one of 91 global telecom giants having submitted expressions of interest for telecom licences to be issued in Myanmar via a "beauty contest".

These operators have until April 4 to submit prequalification documents to bid for one of two telecom licences that will be up for grabs. The names of the companies passing the prequalification process are expected to be announced in late April.

Thai telecom operators joining the fray include True Corp and Advanced Info Service.

Myanmar, which has a population of more than 60 million, had invited foreign operators to express interest in two telecom service licences.

Telenor wants EX-DTAC marketing exec Thana

Norway's telecommunications giant Telenor has approached Thai marketing whiz Thana Thienachariya about becoming the head of its marketing team, which is part of the company's global team that will bid for telecom licences to be issued by the Myanmar authorities.

Telenor is the strategic partner of Total Access Communication (DTAC), at which Thana was once the marketing executive.

In May 2011, he left DTAC to be chief executive officer of PK Garment (Import-Export), the manufacturer and distributor of Mc Jeans, before parting from that company to become chief executive of GMMZ, the satellite-TV business of GMM Grammy, last February. Thana resigned from GMMZ in January this year.

Sigve Brekke, head of Telenor Asia, acknowledged that he had approached Thana about the Myanmar mission.

Thana said he is eager to take on the new job, which he added would give him a chance to work with Brekke, his mentor, again. The Norwegian is a former chief executive officer of DTAC.

The government there has laid down the policy framework for the development of a telecom and ICT industry by promoting competition among local and international operators.

Its main goal is to boost Myanmar's overall telephone density to 75-80 per cent by 2015-2016.
