Panthep: TOT staff to get training in Japan

The collaboration is aimed at helping TOT escape a possibly critical financial loss in 2013, said TOT board chairman Panthep Chamrasromran.

TOT and Softbank will sign the agreement this month.

Under the free agreement, Mr Panthep said Softbank would provide technical know-how on TOT's third-generation (3G) wireless broadband business. It will also evaluate TOT's assets to outline framework proposals for new business models.

TOT staff will also be able to train at Softbank in Japan.

The Japanese mobile giant Softbank will serve as a principal technical adviser to TOT Plc this month to conduct overall business strategy and asset management plans for the state telecom enterprise.

Mr Panthep said TOT will set up two subsidiaries soon: Tower Co and Transmission Co. The state will hold a 49% stake in each company.

He added Softbank could have a business partnership with TOT in the future, as the mobile market in Japan is saturated.

TOT has more than 100,000 kilometres of fibre-optic lines and 13,000 mobile base stations as assets.

In another development, Mr Panthep said TOT would join forces with the Chinese mobile giant China Telecom to build two international internet gateways as backup facilities for Thailand.

The first route will run from Nong Khai province to Laos, China and Russia. The second will link Thailand with Cambodia and Vietnam.

"The new facilities are expected to relieve traffic congestion on CAT's submarine gateway connecting Thailand to Malaysia and Singapore, the sole existing link," he said.

The gateways also expect to serve the expanding economy in Asia, especially Myanmar, he added.

Mr Panthep said TOT would spend tens of millions of baht on the gateway connection in Nong Khai. China Telecom will take responsibility for the rest.

TOT will submit the planned agreement with the Chinese operator to the board on June 14.

Information and Communication Technology Minister Anudith Nakornthap recently ordered TOT to overhaul its 3G business plan and organisational structure.

The minister warned TOT it needed to focus on serving as a network service provider rather than an operator to survive in the business. TOT must devise new business plans and submit them to the State Enterprise Policy Office.

Gp Capt Anudith said TOT should quickly expand its 3G network to increase revenue in order to offset shrinking concession earnings. The concession of TOT's cash cow, the mobile market leader Advanced Info Service, is due to expire in 2015.
